It's too bad. Echo In The Canyon celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA's Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. Full of colourful and often contradictory stories thanks to the copious amounts of pot being smoked at the time, Echo In The Canyon also features appearances from artists influenced by the Laurel Canyon scene, including Beach Boys/Byrds superfan Tom Petty in his final filmed interview before his death in 2017. Because there isn’t quite enough of the original music, either informally played or in classic concert footage, this can’t quite go down as one of the truly great rockumentaries, but for anyone who formed their musical tastes around these big talents, this is a delightful wallow.
