A tour de force display of mannered comedy from a distant age - quite apart from its' medieval setting. Danny Kaye is a treasure! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Except this movie is obviously not sarcastic and sardonic. Don't skip the opening credits and really listen to the words. I bought this because I had my young grandsons staying with me and it was an excuse for me to watch it again. Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2020. My husband and I both giggled like teenagers at this sweet, silly and happy film. I never expected to like this but that first song and dance got me. And of course some amazingly talented actors and actresses who actually play the part and not just get paid to look pretty.
The Court Jester DVD remains a Danny Kaye and an American classic. The film has an excellent supporting cast (including Glynis Johns, Cecil Parker and Angela Lansbury), and colourful costumes by famous designer Edith Head. Entertaining performances from many who are known for other roles (Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes, Cecil Parker/The Ladykillers, Mildred Natwick/The Quiet Man, Glynis Johns/Mary Poppins, Angela Lansbury/Murder She Wrote, and of course Danny Kaye who "made a fool of himself"). Between swordplay and wordplay, Danny Kaye displays his fancy footwork… and his comic genius. It is 101 minutes of super fun. Its excellence may have something to do with the fact that while "The Inspector General" has so far shown up on two of my budget DVD multiple-title collections, "The Court Jester" remains higher-priced and usually alone or with at most one other Kaye movie.
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2019. The only DVD extra is a theatrical trailer for "The Court Jester". Of course the movie is old-fashioned with its satirical, goofy, slap-stick style comedy. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2019. Who could forget the scene where the court jester gets confused about which potion has the poison? Duh, look at the year it was made. I recommend them to everyone, movies PRE-1975. I heard an interview with Ian Hislop recently where he said that this is one of his family favorite films. Some of the sketches here have clearly inspired sitcom writers of the later generations and it was fun to spot these and acknowledge the originator. Smart and witty. Fun lyrics and both subtle and not-so-subtle humor throughout. And of course some amazingly talented actors and actresses who actually play the part and not just get paid to look pretty. In this swashbuckling comic farce, star Danny Kaye plays kind-hearted entertainer Hawkins who disguises himself as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. Recommended for a relaxing evening in. They totally don't make movies like this anymore. You can definitely spot the year/decade this was made by its makeup and hair styles. So silly, so funny. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2019. While I quite like Danny Kaye, I don't like his every movie; in my opinion, "The Court Jester" is easily the very best one he ever made. However I'm afraid time has just about caught up with The Court Jester and what had been a madcap caper may now seem rather plodding and staged to today's audience ... unless you're just cozying up with the toddlers on a wet afternoon. With a stellar supporting cast, including Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury and Mildred Natwick, Kaye sings and dances among dueling knights and damsels in distress. ‘The Court Jester’ is one of Danny Kaye’s most delightful comedy vehicles - although, let’s face it, he’s pretty much delightful in everything he did. Don't skip the opening credits and really listen to the words. Now, if you will excuse me, I'm going to go willow waley it away! These items are shipped from and sold by different sellers.
