Instead however, the throne ultimately went to Franz Josef’s grand-nephew, Karl, who in 1916 became the last Austrian emperor as Emperor Karl, and who, though he tried, was unable to stop the war and to save the Habsburg monarchy from final collapse. Two theories have been postulated. “An unknown person deposited a leather-bound folder containing numerous personal documents, letters and photographs of the Vetsera family, including the farewell letters of Mary Vetsera from 1889,” the ONB said in a statement.
Rudolf’s decision not only left his parents bereft—his mother Elizabeth openly mourned her son for the rest of her life—it also left Austria without a direct male heir. “Until now it had been assumed that the letters had been destroyed after the mother’s death,” the ONB said. His body showed evidence of a major violent struggle. Only after the Emperor died in 1916 did the true details of the couple’s deaths come to light.
The evidence instead suggested she may have been killed by a series of violent blows to the head.

Rudolf was seated at the side of the bed, motionless and with a trickle of blood running from his mouth. By then, many outlandish rumors about the incident were doing the rounds. However, the Crown Prince could not have been known to have committed suicide. Not much a good example of family life to follow.
