Instead however, the throne ultimately went to Franz Josef’s grand-nephew, Karl, who in 1916 became the last Austrian emperor as Emperor Karl, and who, though he tried, was unable to stop the war and to save the Habsburg monarchy from final collapse. Rudolf’s decision not only left his parents bereft—his mother Elizabeth openly mourned her son for the rest of her life—it also left Austria without a direct male heir. “Until now it had been assumed that the letters had been destroyed after the mother’s death,” the ONB said.
