Children love discussing what Ferdinand will do. The Story of Ferdinand is a classic children's book. The story in text and pictures of a bull that was so mild that he preferred to smell the flowers and of how he came to the bull ring and sniffed the ladies' perfume instead of providing sport for the audience. I remember reading this book as child, but I could remember nothing of the actual story. I bought this for a three year old who just loves the movie and always asks to watch ‘the bull.’ I read several reviews that stated this version was not great and to find the original unabridged version.

It is an exceptionally beautiful book: Munro Leaf wrote the story for his friend, the illustrator Robert Lawson who produced a magnificent series of illustrations to accompany the well-crafted minimal narrative. Written by the wonderfully named Munro Leaf and lovingly illustrated in black and white by Robert Lawson, The Story of Ferdinand, set in Spain, was first published in 1936, the same year that the Spanish Civil War (subject of my first novel, The Poet’s Wife!)
