Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are both modern, high-fidelity titles with built-in benchmarks that illustrate how a system handles real-world video games at various settings.

If you’re a more serious gamer, you’ll want to wait for the 2019 version of the Omen Obelisk that HP announced at CES. Ports (rear): USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C, 4 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A, RJ-45, 3 x audio outputs, 3 x Displayport, HDMI 2.08, DVI8

For now, though, the Core i7-8700-equipped model I'm reviewing here, paired with a GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card, has no trouble driving a 4K screen.
Going down to the entry-level in the US, and you’ll find a $700 configuration featuring an AMD Ryzen 5 2500X CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, 8GB RAM and 1TB of HDD storage. Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD / 1TB 7200 rpm SATA These tests push processors to their limits more than PCMark 10 does. All six buttons are programmable in the Omen Control Center software. In true gaming style, the Mindframe has RGB lighting on each earcup. Yes, you’ll have to shell out more cash than you would if you were looking for a budget gaming PC, but if you’re looking to have a smooth and easy gaming experience on Ultra settings, you’re not really doing any gratuitous spending, especially since you’re essentially investing for the future as well as the present. The front-panel port selection is fair, comprising a USB Type-A 3.0 port with sleep-and-charge capability, a second USB Type-A 3.0 port, and headset and microphone jacks. The two hard drive bays located behind the front panel use tabs to lock the hard drives in place and pop them out quickly should you need to. There's a mute button to its left, and four media-playback keys lie just below. On the whole, the build feels high quality, even at the elevated price for our test configuration.

In this case, it's rendered in the company's eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark, for a second opinion on the machine's graphical prowess.

That configuration, which is the most expensive in the UK, sets you back £1,899, which makes it more or less $100 pricier than its US counterpart. It would have been nice to see a heat spreader on top. If splurging on a gaming PC is your next investment move, the HP Omen Obelisk is a powerhouse to consider. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, he enjoys all aspects of consumer and business tech, especially PCs, tablets, and photography.

Alas for the Obelisk, though, the trailing trend remains versus the other two Core i9-9900K/RTX 2080 Ti machines here. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing.

It doesn’t, however, give access to overclocking, and only displays GPU, CPU and memory utilization for monitoring. The table below can serve as a cheat sheet for getting an idea of the competition…. Shares. You may hope for a bit more than that, as it’s the most expensive configuration here (the Corsair comes close, but even then it owes much of its price to its comapct design). We like its compact size and most of the design, though the fans are loud. One unusual feature of this mouse is its adjustable-height palm rest. The 6.5-foot braided cable is overly thick to the point where it's hard to bend. That's high, considering Nvidia rates the GPU for 88 degrees C, but that is typical performance for a blower-style cooler. Whether the thermals or something else are to blame, I’m not sure, but even the tight-packed Corsair One outpaces HP’s larger system by a couple of thousand points on 3DMark and more than 10 frames per second (fps) on the Superposition 1080p High test. This Obelisk test unit weighs 22 pounds. Next is Maxon’s CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads. The Obelisk impresses on first viewing, partially from its size alone. As for the PCMark 8 Storage test, its SSD is ever so slightly at the bottom of a very tight range, and all of these systems have SSDs that are snappy for boot and load times. By Michelle Rae Uy 20 May 2019. A similar configuration is on hand in the UK with a couple of differences: it has half the memory, at 16GB, and a storage combo of 256GB SSD + 2TB HDD. The Photoshop test stresses CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters, so systems with powerful graphics chips or cards may see a boost. Ports (front): USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A with fast charge, USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A, audio combo jack, mic jack That height isn’t especially remarkable, but it’s a compact case as a whole because it’s narrow and not very deep.

It offered a Core i9-9900K processor and the same graphics card as our Obelisk for $2,039 at this writing, albeit with half the memory (16GB) and SSD storage (256GB). You have entered an incorrect email address! The Omen Control Center also allows you to configure the Reactor's two RGB lighting zones. That is, we don’t experience any latency or tearing, only smooth movements and rock-solid performance. Shares. If you want to save some money and still have a quality gaming experience, upgrading this to boast an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU and 16GB RAM will only cost you $190 more and give you solid AAA gaming on medium to high settings. Still, these relatively granular differences shouldn’t be the main factor in your decision. Hitman 2 did crash on us just once, but only once. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1080p, Ultra): 117 fps; (1080p, Low): 146 fps.

If it solves problems for you, it may well be worth the trade-offs. Virtually all of the components in our config scale down in power or capacity, starting with the entry-level model. Meanwhile, the Overpowered Gaming Desktop (DTW3) should perform similarly, equipped with a last-generation GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card that's roughly equivalent to the GeForce RTX 2080 in the Obelisk. The synthetic tests above are helpful for measuring general 3D aptitude, but it’s hard to beat full retail video games for judging gaming performance. I found the two on the left edge within easy thumb reach. Fan whine isn't present, but motor noise is, and it's audible over mild background noise under full load.

They’re definitely not ideal for gaming, but since most, if not all, gamers invest in peripherals specifically designed for gaming, anyway, getting into details about these isn’t necessary. There are a few configurations that will set you back less than $1,000 and get you through medium settings beautifully. Unfortunately, as far as customizations via the Omen Command Center, there’s not much you can do.The Omen Obelisk only has Lighting Control and Network Booster on hand, the former to let you set the animation and color for the RGB lighting in front and inside the chassis, the latter allowing you to set network priorities and boost bandwidth usage for running programs. For non-gaming applications, I found the Mindframe's sound to be hollow and distant.
I would say the same for the less-expensive Obelisk model we reviewed earlier this year, which also didn’t have the fan-noise issue.

By Alan Bradley 07 February 2019 Comments The inside isn’t visually spectacular, but it’s very clean and organized. Like the Omen Desktop, it boasts a tool-less design, even if it isn’t as extensive. Interior access couldn’t be easier. It's for right-handers only; the thumb ledge on its left edge signals that. You can slide the switch on the right edge and angle it to your liking. The demanding Fire Strike test shows the Omen Obelisk at a minor disadvantage next to the Corsair Vengeance Gaming PC 5180, despite sharing the same processor and graphics card.

The results are also provided in frames per second. Then again, HP is known to have sales, and I suspect the Obelisk will be competitively priced when it's available with the newer 9th generation Intel chips. Both have pinch-to-slide-out caddies and require no tools to install a drive.
